WHAT’S IT LIKE?:
From its split-level front bar to the newly-extended rear bar, the Village Inn prides itself in its smart and comfortable interiors. Even the toilets have won awards for their cleanliness and luxury.
It is only comparatively recently that the pub’s name was changed from The Bell and there is a hint as to its former identity in the road in which it stands — Bell Lane. In fact, the first Bell stood on the other side of the road before the owner, John Whitling, put up the present building in 1875.
The original building, which dated back to at least 1789, was demolished in 1894.
WHO GOES THERE?:
A stone’s thrown from the Iron Age Liddington Castle, which flanks the ancient Ridgeway track, The Village Inn provides a pleasant stop for thirsty walkers and cyclists exploring the local countryside.
Weary travellers can also look forward to a restorative stay at the venue which doubles up as a B&B.
PRICES:
3B £2.95, Kingsdown £3.20, Wiltshire Gold £2.90. A small glass of house wine is £3.35. A large glass of house wine is £4.50.
