PATRIOTIC spirit galloped through the streets of Swindon as the town celebrated St George’s Day.

A knight riding a noble steed led the annual procession today, which began at Wharf Green, and also included schoolchildren dressed as dragons and knights, Mayor Teresa Page and a host of mock royalty.

The town centre march was organised by the InSwindon Bid group and was hailed a success by shoppers stopped in the street to cheer on the parade and take pictures.

Di Powell, InSwindon manager, said: “It has been absolutely amazing, the children have been wonderful and it was great to see them in their costumes.

"We are delighted with how well things have gone today, it was very good to see so many shoppers showing an interest and we are pleased that a lot of retailers are behind us.

"We’d like to thank everyone who has been involved with the festivities."

Mayor Teresa Page said: “It is great to see so many people involved with the celebrations of St George and it has been a real treat for people in the town centre to see the horse.”

As well as visiting the town centre events the mayor also attended St Mary’s Catholic Primary School and St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School to support their celebrations.

She attended an assembly at each school and spoke with the children about St George’s legacy.

Ruth Lee, St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School's associate headteacher, said: “Our visit from the mayor has really enhanced our St George’s Day celebrations.

"The children have been very excited about her visit to both schools in our this morning and the children have had the opportunity to ask her questions about the important role that she has carried out on behalf of our town.

"Today has been a day of celebrating British values in our school and parish community."

Town centre shoppers have until Sunday to take part in the St George’s treasure trail with the chance of winning a range of prizes.

As part of the activity, those taking part must identify the stores involed. Those participating have St George’s Day imagery in their windows.

Di added: “We’re delighted that we have the support of over 100 town centre retailers, who are joining the occasion by participating in a fantastic St George’s treasure trail.

“It is great family fun with some excellent prizes up for grabs.”

Treasure hunt entry forms and maps are available from Central Library, the Brunel Centre and online at www.swindontowncentre.co.uk. Completed answers and questions can be sent to competitions@inswindon.com
