A SWINDON school has scooped the top honour at a national education awards.

Uplands school in Tadpole Lane was named the best overall school at the 2015 TES school awards.

In a glittering awards ceremony held at London’s Grosvenor House hotel last night, Uplands received the prestigious accolade together with the alternative provision school of the year award.

Royal Wootton Bassett Academy also received a nod in the secondary school category but was beaten to the top prize.

Winners were selected by an esteemed panel of judges including writer Anthony Horowitz, Dr. Lee Elliot Major, Chief Executive of the Sutton Trust, and Colin Bell, Chief Executive of the Council of British International Schools.

More than 1,000 education professionals attended a black-tie event in London, hosted by BAFTA-nominated writer and comedian Greg Davies.

The awards have 17 categories, including primary school, secondary school, head teacher and healthy school of the year.

Uplands school provides education for children with special needs aged between 11 and 19.

Judges said: "It's just a delight to come across such a fantastic school,”.

The TES (Times Education Supplement) Schools Awards, which are now in their seventh year, recognise outstanding contributions made by education teams and individuals to help students around the country to succeed, both inside and outside the classroom.
