PERFECT pugs donned Christmas jumpers and sparkling Santa suits to celebrate the end of a successful first year for a unique town group.

A festive blizzard of pugs from the Pug Community Swindon/Wiltshire group descended on Lydiard Millicent village hall for a Christmas party complete with doggy treats, Santa Paws and raffle.

More than 40 pugs, known as a grumble, attended the festive soiree which marked the culmination of a the group's first year.

The party was organised by award winning pug breeder Lynne Kellow.

Lynne, who is the proud owner of eight fawn pugs, said the day proved to be a Christmas delight for pugs and owners alike.

“It had a really fun atmosphere, all the pugs were being really sociable and it was a good experience for everyone involved. The group keeps on growing so we’re hoping to see more responsible pug owners in the near future,” she said.

“Pugs are such intelligent animals and to see them all come together is quite a sight. I think they tolerate the outfits rather than enjoy wearing them though,”

Group founder Jonathan Newman brought along two year-old fawn pug Taz to the party. The stylish hound scooped first place in the fancy dress competition with a stunning take on a reindeer costume complete with glittery antlers.

The day also served a pug-friendly sausages and biscuit buffet which got all the pooches excited.

“Taz had a really fun day out, and he is a very sociable dog anyway," said Jonathan. "All the pugs and pug owners had a great day out and it’s great to socialise and share tips with everyone.

All the lucky pugs got a chance to sit on Santa Paws knee with almost £200 raised for charity Pug Dog Welfare and Rescue Association UK which helps with the welfare, rescue and rehoming of pugs.

Jonathan founded the group to promote responsible pug ownership along with a fun and friendly sociable atmosphere.

The group quickly gathered status across the town with more than 100 owners joining the Newman family on their monthly walks.

Pug Community Swindon meets on the first Sunday of every month at Lydiard Park with pugs donning their Sunday best and fancy dress.
