CHILDREN got in touch with their artistic side at a primary school’s exhibition on Wednesday.

Pupils at Catherine Wayte Primary School, Abbey Meads picked up their paintbrushes to create winter-themed artworks.

All 413 pupils channelled different artists with year threes taking inspiration from abstract artist Mondrian and year four painting in the mysterious style of Van Gogh’s Starry Night.

Each canvas was framed and placed on a cream mount by Wiltshire based company Images before going on display.

Friends and family members were invited to see the children's winter wonderland at a special afternoon exhibition at the school.

Helen Wheeler, art and year two teacher at Catherine Wayte Primary School, said she was impressed with the level of artistry present in the exhibition.

“We’ve had some incredible feedback from the parents and the children have been so excited to see their artwork looking all professional," she said. "The year twos who I teach have done some stunning silhouette trees which look magical. I am very proud of all of them.

“They have all worked very hard on the paintings and it is clear to see when you see how much effort has gone into the paintings.”

Helen said art was an integral part of the school’s syllabus and praised the power of paint.

“Art gives children a voice. It gives them a chance to express themselves in a way that isn’t written down and sometimes a child isn’t able to express themselves through words. It’s something that is open to everyone and it is a form of communication that it beautiful to see.”
