Former England international David Hazell has died in Somerset at the age of 76.

The Leicester and Bristol prop forward, who won four caps for his country in the 1955 Five Nations campaign, passed away in a Taunton nursing home.

David St George Hazell - he was born on St George's Day in 1931 - was educated at Taunton School and Loughborough Colleges.

He played for Leicester while at Loughborough and then teaching in Nottingham and made 81 first team appearances, scoring 265 points to underline his value as a goalkicker.

While at Welford Road he was called up by England and made his debut in a 3-0 defeat against Wales in Cardiff on January 15, 1955.

He featured in a 6-6 draw in Ireland and in the 16-9 defeat against France the following month but kicked the winning goal in England's 9-6 win over Scotland in March.

Hazell returned to the Westcountry to teach PE and maths and was the master in charge of cricket and rugby at Taunton School.

He played on for Bristol, making 241 appearances between 1956 and 1964, also captaining Somerset and playing for the Western Counties against New Zealand in 1963/64.

His funeral takes place at Taunton Deane crematorium on Wednesday, June 6 (2.30pm).
