YOUNG people who haven't been eligible to vote before are being urged to make sure they are registered to vote in the EU Referendum which takes place on June 23 by Wiltshire Council.

There are just under two weeks until the deadline to register on June 7 or risk not having a say on this key national issue.

The deadline for postal vote applications is June, 8 and proxy votes need to be registered by June 15. Anyone who is already on the electoral roll does not need to re-register.

The EU Referendum takes place on June 23 and there will be hundreds of polling stations located around the county.

Some members of the Wiltshire Assembly of Youth have contributed to a short video, below, encouraging young people to register to vote and have explained why it is important to their future to get involved.

Carlton Brand, the council's corporate director and returning officer for Wiltshire, said: “We want as many people in Wiltshire to come out and vote on June 23. It’s good for democracy if there’s a high turnout as that shows that local people really care about issues that affect them.

“In particular, I would encourage young people who are eligible to vote for the first time to make sure they get on to the electoral roll. If we can engage them to join the political process from an early age then it means future generations will be passionate and more informed about local and national issues that will impact their daily lives.”
