A VINYL-loving couple are hoping the opening of their new record store will be music to people’s ears.
Liden residents Karrie Miszkowska and Gregg Miszkowski, both 30, are following their dreams to turn their passion into a career by opening RPM Records in Old Town.
Scaffolding currently surrounds what was Talk of the Town hairdressers in Devizes Road while work is underway, but in a few weeks’ time it will be transformed into a haven for those wanting to discover new music.
The couple, who have a daughter named Darcey, and dog Jax who is the store's mascot, will be open for business on Saturday, July 23 with in-store performances from bands and DJs. There will also be freebies and cupcakes for people to enjoy.
“We are both nervous and excited in different ways,” said Karrie.
“It is going to be surreal once the shop is actually open and we have made a big dream become a reality in a matter of months. We have proved to ourselves, and many others, that anyone can start their own business.”
It was while Gregg was queuing outside of Sound Knowledge in Marlborough at 4am on Record Store Day, talking to other collectors, that gave them the final push they needed to open their store.
“We have always appreciated music in some form but the appreciation for vinyl outweighs every other format and it always will,” Karrie said.
“There is nothing quite like the feel of a new vinyl; tearing the cellophane off, taking the record out, even down to the smell and the actual physical feel of having something so delicate to look after.
“Now, we can share our passion for records with other like-minded collectors and provide a social space for collectors to get together and share their appreciation for music.”
Before deciding to take the plunge, Gregg, a former St Joseph’s student, spent six years working as a warehouse manager for an events company. Before that he went to Southampton Solent University and completed a degree in popular music and record production.
While former Dorcan student Karrie, who was a midwife and now works in HR, will continue her job during the week and will be helping out in the store at the weekends.
The couple, who have been married for more than a year, also chose Old Town as they feel it is a hub for independent businesses.
Karrie added: “What makes us different is when you enter our store you will find a comfortable seating area with record players and headphones ready to sample a range of brand new releases alongside second hand classics.”
The store will be open Monday to Fridays; 10am to 7pm, Saturdays; 9am to 7pm and Sundays; 10am to 5pm. For more details go to their Facebook page at facebook.com/RPMRecordsLtd/ or rpmrecordsltd.co.uk
