A TRACTOR trailer full of straw bales toppled over with a nasty bang this afternoon after a roundabout mishap.
Luckily the male driver escaped injury as the tractor managed to stay on the road following the incident near Honda north gate and the B&Q Distribution Centre just before 4pm.
However, the trailer spilled all its cargo and straw was scattered everywhere.
Drivers were being urged to find alternative routes as Highworth Road was closed near to the Honda south gate while the straw bales were recovered.
Swindon Borough Council highways team were also on the scene to help resurface and clear the road.
"The trailer has made a gouge in the road and council highways are currently dealing with this. The road is partially blocked,” a Wiltshire Police spokesman said.
PC Chris Wickham was also on the scene, he told the Adver: “My two colleagues were passing at 4pm and I came to offer assistance with an extra car.
“The tractor has been travelling from the direction of Honda towards Upper Stratton and has gone over for reasons yet unknown.
“The trailer has been pulled back up and the roundabout has been closed so the straw can be safely loaded back on to it.
“There is a bit of a gouge in the road from when the trailer has gone over and it is going to be repaired so no cyclists or motorcyclists hit it.
“I will anticipate the tractor will be moved at 5.30pm, as soon as that’s out the way we can get the road open after the surface is sorted.”
