A MAN has been jailed after he broke into a service station less than a week after he had been given a suspended prison sentence.

Simon Smith, 41, of Clive Parade, pleaded guilty to entering the Chiseldon Service Station as a trespasser on August 16.

Magistrates told him he would serve two weeks behind bars for this offence and ordered that he pay compensation of £50.

Smith had been sentenced to four months behind bars, suspended for 18 months on August 10 after he was convicted of possessing an offensive weapon, five charges of theft and assault by beating.

Activating this sentence along with his new prison sentence, he was sent down for 18 weeks.

A thief has been sent to prison after he stole from two shops within two months of receiving a suspended jail sentence.

Ashley Lane, 29, of Derby Court, pleaded guilty to stealing £80 of food from McColls in Wroughton on July 31. He also pleaded guilty to stealing £84-worth of food the previous day from Esso on Rodbourne Road.

Magistrates told him he would be going to jail for one week for each of the thefts, which would run consecutively. He was also told to pay compensation.

Magistrates activated an earlier suspended prison sentence of 12 weeks imposed on June 8 for 12 charges. This will run consecutively to his two weeks, putting him behind bars for 14 weeks.

A driver will be sentenced at Swindon Crown Court after he was found above the drink-drive limit while behind the wheel of a car and in possession of a knife.

When Stephen Penhaligon, 33, of Portbyhan Road, West Looe in Cornwall, came before magistrates sitting in Swindon he pleaded guilty to driving an 08-plate Ford Fiesta on the B4109 at Swindon with 69mcg of alcohol in 100ml of his breath on July 30 He further pleaded guilty to driving that Fiesta dangerously and refused to stop for police officers when directed.

When stopped In Pasteur Drive they found he had a knife, which he also admitted.

The magistrates committed him for sentence at Swindon Crown Court on a date to be fixed. In the meantime he was released on unconditional bail, although the bench imposed an interim driving ban on him.

Stealing alcohol from the Co-operative has led to a man being given a conditional discharge.

Dean Cochrane, 35, currently of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to stealing the booze from the supermarket on July 28 when he came before the bench at Swindon Magistrates’ Court.

The magistrates imposed a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered that Cochrane pay a £20 victim surcharge, which will be consolidated with outstanding court debts.

A young driver has been banned from the roads for more than a year after he was caught above the drink drive limit.

Connor Denness, 20, of High Street, Kempsford, pleaded guilty to driving an 04-plate Vauxhall Corsa In Skinners Close, Hannington, on July 31 while above the drink drive limit.

He was found to have 49mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal driving limit is 35mcg.

Magistrates sitting in Swindon who heard his guilty plea fined him £265 and ordered he pay a £30 victim surcharge along with £85 towards the costs of the Crown Prosecution Service.

He was further banned from driving for 14 months, although he can reduce his ban by 14 weeks if he completes a drink drivers’ awareness course.

A 29-year-old woman has walked out of court with a bill for more than £500 after she drove a car without road tax.

Corinne Hunter of Overbrook, Eldene, pleaded guilty to driving the 09-plate vehicle on Thamesdown Drive on January 29 without having valid vehicle excise duty when she came before the bench at Swindon Magistrates’ Court.

The magistrates fined her £300 and ordered she pay the VED at £168.75 along with court costs of £90.

Damaging another man's possessions has seen a man walk out of court facing a bill for more than £1,000.

Jason Wright, 32, of William Street, pleaded guilty to damaging a coffee table, TV and carpet to the value of £800 on August 2 when he came before magistrates sitting in Swindon.

The bench fined him £300 for the offence and ordered he pay £800 compensation to the victim along with a victim surcharge of £30 and Crown Prosecution Service costs of £85.

He was told these latest debts would be consolidated with his existing court fines.

Darrell Edwards of Fairview, Highworth denies assaulting a woman on July 3.

Edwards, aged 42 will stand trial at North West Wiltshire Magistrates' Court in Chippenham on September 21. In the meantime he was released on conditional bail.
