MUSICIAN AJ Mayhew is promising good vibes and even better music when the town’s reggae festival returns this weekend.

He’s even doing a special sun dance to make the clouds go away so there is nothing but glorious weather for the annual Reggae Garden Family Festival.

It will take place at The Bowl in Town Gardens, Old Town, from 12 midday until 9pm on Saturday with a huge line-up. The event usually attracts thousands from far and wide.

“We are mega excited,” said AJ, who organises the festival with Paul Bullimore.

“The event is one of the favourite days on the calendar and we really pride ourselves on the line-up as it is the best quality.

“We have almost every generation attend; from kids to grandparents. They all come together to enjoy the reggae music and culture.”

Opening the day will be Messenjah Youth, while around 70 children aged five to 16 from 2 Step Dance Academy will then take to the stage to perform.

Also topping the bill are Brother Culture & The Upper Cut Band, Michael Prophet and Barefoot Bandit.

“The atmosphere will be brilliant,” AJ added.

“It’s really relaxed and there will be a bouncy castle and face painting for the kids.

"Some people bring blankets and get their spot for the day. As the festival fills up people start moving forward and have a good old knees-up on the dance floor.”

The event started six years ago after AJ decided to throw a themed party at The Bell before he left to go travelling in Australia for a year and it was so successful it grew from there and to a bigger venue.

This week AJ and his team have been putting the final touches to the event which will also have Caribbean dishes being served by restaurant Moshan Island Grill.

He said: “Me and Paul are the brains of the operation but we could not do it without the massive team who help.

“At the moment we are crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s and doing the nitty gritty bits to make sure everyone knows what they are doing so it runs smoothly.

“We have sold so many tickets.”

Tickets start from £10 adults and are selling fast. Go to: thereggaegarden.com
