SWINDONIANS have again been out taking photographs of fantastic sunsets over the town.

The stunning views on Monday evening were created by a combination of cloud and contrasting temperatures as the sun goes down, say meteorologists.

But the below zero temperatures this morning brought freezing fog to many places, with Heathrow Airport cancelling up to 100 flights.

The reduced visibility gave the airport no choice but to cancel 100 out of 1,300 flights, according to a spokesman.

There were also problems at Gatwick, London City, Stansted and Southampton airports.

The Met Office issued a weather warning for the south west, including Swindon and Wiltshire council areas, as areas of freezing fog, some dense, were expected to form again from 6pm tonight and to last until 11am on Wednesday.

“Icy patches on untreated roads and paths are an additional hazard,” said a spokesman.

“Travelling conditions will be difficult with journeys likely to take longer than usual and delays to air travel are possible.”
