POLICE have promised to increase their presence in Redhouse after a 16-year-old boy was assaulted with a hammer by another boy on Monday afternoon.

The assault is believed to have happened around 3.30pm on the roundabout at the junction with Redhouse Way and Millgrove Street.

The 16-year-old, a pupil at Isambard Community School, received a cut to the back of his head causing non-serious injuries.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics who later took him to hospital, but he was released soon after.

A 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of causing GBH and has been released on conditional bail.

Since the incident, police say they want to reassure residents that their investigation is still ongoing but would be keen to hear from anyone in the area at the time.

Phillippa Sharpley, community coordinator for Swindon North Community Policing Team, said: “As you may be aware there was an incident at Isambard Community School on Monday afternoon. A pupil was assaulted by another youth when leaving the school.

"Police were called and a male has been arrested. Enquiries are ongoing and being conducted by officers within Swindon CID.

“We would like to reassure residents that whilst the motivation is unknown at this time it appears to be between the parties concerned and is not related to other members of the community. Nor is it believed to be gang related.

"As a result of the incident there will be an increased police presence this week at the school as pupils leave and over the weekend in the Redhouse area itself.”

Anyone with information should contact Swindon CID on 101 or anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
