YOUNGSTERS put the pedal to the metal for a charity cycling event in aid of the NSPCC this weekend.

Toddlers and children from Meadowpark Nursery, Cricklade took to their bikes, trikes and scooters for a morning cycle around the playground.

The nursery pupils, all aged between two and four, took it in turns to complete laps of the playground with their proud parents cheering them on.

The children were sponsored for the event with all proceeds donated towards the NSPCC.

And despite cloudy weather the childrens’ enthusiasm wasn’t dampened as they clocked up the laps.

Headteacher Rajvinder Kular said she was delighted to be holding the event for the 11th year and hoped to raise at least £500.

She said: “I do feel very proud when I see the children getting involved. It is also a great opportunity for the parents to catch up with the staff and each other.

“All the children have been really excited about how they can play a part in learning about how they can help others less fortunate than themselves. They have been discussing it with teachers and there will be refreshments for the parents. They cheer the children on and some get quite competitive.”

“We want the children to have that awareness that not every child is as lucky as they are and encourage them to be active and get involved for a good cause. I am delighted with how well it has gone today.”

Matt Barnes, from South Cerney, cheered on his four-year-old daughter Zara who completed an impressive 31 laps of the playground. Her seven-year-old sister Poppy was also there to support her sister.

He said: “I am very proud of Zara, she has just kept going today and I have been cheering her on. It’s a good way for kids to stay active and raise money for a great charity.”
