ESCAPED prisoner Michal Kisiel has been recaptured after being spotted by a member of the public.

Kisiel, 30, was being treated for a head wound at Salisbury District Hospital on Tuesday when he managed to escape from prison guards apparently armed with a razor.

He was arrested last night evening after he was seen in Nunton, Wiltshire, about five miles from where he managed to escape.

Wiltshire Police said he would be returned to prison "in due course".

There were "a large number" of calls reporting possible sightings of Kisiel yesterday after appeals for information were made, which had led them to believe he had fled the county.

Police received a call at about 8.20pm from someone who recognised Kisiel when they saw him walking past a day nursery.

Kisiel, originally from Poland, was serving a five-year sentence at Erlestoke Prison, near Devizes.

He was jailed in April 2016 after keeping a woman and her teenage daughter prisoner in their home in a "terrifying eight-hour ordeal", and threatening to kill them.

Supt Sue Austin said: “I would like to thank the public for all of their help in finding this escaped prisoner. As much as we are able to use policing methods to find him, ultimately it was an alert member of our community who spotted the offender and proactively called 999.

“It times like this when everyone pulls together to help us keep our communities safe.”

Police are investigating the possibility that he had help to escape.
