The daughter of a former Mayor of Swindon is going on a challenging trek across Peru to raise money for Prospect Hospice in memory of her mother.

Vikki Woodman is following in her mum Judith Stoddart's footsteps by embarking on a two-week journey along an Inca trail on Friday June 16.

Judith went to Peru in her early 60's after surviving her first bout of breast cancer but the disease returned five years later and she died in August 2014.

She spent the last 16 days of her life in Prospect Hospice being looked after and supported by the charity's hard-working staff.

Now Vikki is training hard to get fit and go on the same journey to raise money for the charity and pay tribute to her much-missed mum.

Vikki said: "My mum was very fit, she got into fitness after she first had cancer and did treks all over the world and climbed Kilimanjaro and Three Peaks.

"When I was sorting through her stuff, I found a diary of a trip to Peru, one of her first treks, and I thought it would be good to replicate it in her honour.

"Mum would think it's hysterical that her unfit daughter's doing something like this.

"I can now run 5k, which isn't much but that's a massive achievement for me."

Judith's secondary breast cancer affected her bones and her spine, causing severe back pain and making walking difficult. Worst of all, it was incurable.

Vikki praised Prospect's priceless help during her mum's toughest time.

The 44-year-old said: "Prospect deserve every penny, it was very scary and upsetting but they were amazing, they came out to the house and fitted it up.

"It was a complete shock, overnight she went from extremely fit to - well, if she hadn't had radiotherapy, she would've been in a wheelchair.

"She was robbed of her love of being fit and it was devastating."

Peter Stoddart was Mayor of Swindon from 2004 to 2005 and as mayoress, Judith raised money for breast cancer charities.

Peter is now Parish Councillor for West Swindon after being a Swindon Borough Councillor for 20 years.

He said: "Prospect are a wonderful and caring organisation, they were outstanding and they looked after Judith so well.

"I'm very proud of my step-daughter Vikki, she's really gone for it.

"It's a very daunting trail and it was taxing on Judith but she really enjoyed it."

Vikki added: "I'm really lucky, I've had a lot of support from friends and from work, I'm really chuffed. I'd like to raise at least £1,000 but it will be tough because I'm really pushing myself out of my comfort zone.

"I've never had the desire to be halfway up a mountain in a tent - until now!"
