YEAR Six pupils at a Swindon primary school are to entertain parents and grandparents with a fabulous production of Oliver.

The talented youngsters yesterday gave their first performance to their fellow pupils before today’s two big shows for a somewhat older crowd.

Tradition holds that Year Sixers at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, in Bessemer Road East, each year perform a big show, and this year the pupils wanted to have a go at popular musical Oliver.

Musical director Sheila Harrod was thrilled with all the hard work the pupils have put in over the past four weeks.

She said: “It has been fabulous. I have loved rehearsing with them and I’m still as passionate now as I was when I first started at the age of 17.

“All these kids know exactly what they’re doing and I’m sure they will absolutely love it. They have all worked very hard indeed.”

The backdrop had been put together by a trusty band of volunteers and every pupil, according to Sheila, had put their heart and soul into it.

St Mary’s teacher Colm McCavera, who has had a big hand in putting the show together, said: “They are quite a musical bunch, and very talented. And we are very lucky to have Sheila because she always does a fantastic job.

“It’s the first time I have been involved with this and I have loved it - and learned a lot.

“I think the kids will be brilliant and I know they are all really looking forward to performing for the mums and dads.”
