WHEN teachers at Chiseldon Primary School asked pupils to 'jazz' up their scooters for the fair, they weren't expecting a model VW camper van.

But that's what one enterprising student brought to school on Friday afternoon.

The snazzy scooter was one of around a dozen that had been decorated for the school's annual summer fair.

Pupils, parents and teachers enjoyed a beautiful afternoon under the sun, with a barbecue, craft stalls, army display, an old James Bond car and a Swindon Town FC shoot out among the attractions on offer. Money raised from the fair would go to the school, organisers said.

The fair had an Alice in Wonderland theme, with the eponymous character wandering among the crowds. If fans of the book were confused as to why a man dressed as spiderman wandered with her, they were too polite to say.

The event had been organised by teaching assistants Jan Matthews and Claire Jordan.

Jan, 56, said: "It has taken weeks to get together. But with the help of the staff here and the parents, we've managed it."

"It looks incredible," added Claire, 45.

Jo Millard's five-year-old, Zachary, had spent Sunday dressing up his scooter with a jazzy numbers design. The Chiseldon mum-of-two, 40 said: "The whole village comes together at the fair. There's something for everyone."

Kathy McPherson, 78, from South Marston, attended the fair with her grandchildren: "I think it's fantastic for a small village. There are lots and lots of smiles on the children's faces."

Headteacher Spencer Allen was full of praise for the organisers. "It's a great day," he said. "The sun's out, the barbecue's going and the drinks are flowing."
