SWINDON Town are on the verge of signing Northampton Town midfielder Matt Taylor, the Advertiser understand.

The 35-year-old, who has played for Portsmouth and Burnley in the Premier League, only signed a new 12-month contract with the Cobblers at the end of last season after activating an appearance-related clause in his contract.

However, Swindon appear to have landed the former West Ham United man, who made 48 appearances in all competitions for Northampton last term, who was left out their 4-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic on Saturday due to situations unfolding behind the scenes.

Swindon are expected to confirm the deal tomorrow morning, with manager David Flitcroft, who was seen speaking to chairman Lee Power on the pitch at the Globe Arena after Saturday’s win, stating he was still in the market to improve the squad.

“Myself and the chairman speak most days on improving the squad and looking at squad balance and we will continue to do that,” he said on Saturday.

“It’s something we’ve done ok with up until now and if there is anyone out there that we feel makes the squad better, we’ll have an opportunity to bring them in.”

However, one player Flitcroft is keen to keep at the County Ground is goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux.

The 23-year-old has been the subject of mounting interest over the course of the summer but the Town boss is confident he can keep hold of his talisman beyond next Thursday’s transfer deadline.

“I don’t think so, no,” added Flitcroft, when asked if it will be battle to keep hold of the former Liverpool stopper.

“The chairman wants to keep him, he wants to be successful this season, I do and we’ll just keep moving forward.

“It’s important (that we keep Vigouroux) but it’s important that I keep all the players here.

“We’re trying to build something and it’s important that we keep hold of players.

“Lawrence is no different from any player, I don’t treat him any different from any of the other players, it’s a team performance and I’ll always look towards that.”
