FLASH flooding has hit a key junction in Stratton.

The volume of water is causing difficulty for motorists and making conditions impassible for pedestrians.

Cars making their way across the junction of Ermin Street and Swindon Road had no choice but to plough into the standing water, sending waves flowing out to the sides and spray shooting up from the wheel arches.

One woman described it as the worst flooding she remembered in the time she had been in the area.

It is not yet clear whether last night's torrential downpour is to blame for the build-up or if there has been a leak or blockage in the mains system.

A spokesman for Thames Water said its teams had not been notified of an issue and are not currently responding.

Swindon Borough Council has sent a team from its highways department to investigate the cause.

A spokesman said: "Depending on the cause, we will move forward with the appropriate response.

"There could be a number of parties responsible for the maintenance of the drainage depending on what has caused the flooding."
