A REDESIGN of an Old Town post office has been given parish councillors’ stamp of approval.

Applicants hope to divide the Victoria Road post office in two, with one half of the brick building remaining as a post office and the other offered up as a new shop.

They plan to retain the ATM cash machine on the front of the building – moving it closer to the existing post office entrance.

While the building is not listed, it does sit in a conservation area. Applicants say they will not “alter the shape of the façade”.

At a meeting on Tuesday night, South Swindon parish council’s planning committee voted to support the application.

Coun Steve Allsopp said: “In my humble opinion, given the façade is likely being protected and the post office is being protected by the fact there is a smaller post office and an additional unit, which I assume will help sustain the viability of the post office, I think it’s [an application] we should not jeopardise but fully support.”
