EMERGENCY services responded to car and lorry drivers stranded in up to five foot of snow on treacherous roads near a golf club in Marlborough.

One woman tweeted Wiltshire Police to say her son and his friends had spent the night in his car en-route to Swindon as they couldn’t drive over a hill.

Officers arrived to help in the early hours of this morning and the force later reiterated advice to only leave home if absolutely necessary.

The worst affected spot was a snow drift on the A346 near Ogbourne Downs Golf Club.

Among those contacting emergency services was the worried Twitter user whose son was among “numerous” motorists to become stranded.

Wiltshire police responded: “We are working with the council on the A346 currently if this is the road you mean? There are numerous people stuck in their vehicles and a number of lorries due to 5ft snow drifts. We are helping where we can.”

The Twitter user replied: “They're all stuck and parked on the HighSt, in the middle bit. Would be nice to check on them if you can as they spent the night in their vehicles. They're on route to Swindon. Earliest café near opens 7am I think so hope they can recover w breakkie... thanks again.”

Wiltshire Police confirmed it had responded to a request for help from a stranded motorist that had been called in at 1.45am this morning.

A spokesman said: ”We advised the motorists that we would get a patrol to them within a half an hour and we arrived to help them at 2.10am.”

The force reiterated general safety information advising the public to only leave home if absolutely necessary, allowing plenty of time if heading out, taking necessary supplies and always letting someone know of timings and whereabouts.

People have also been advised to call on elderly or vulnerable neighbours to make sure they are safe and well. The advice read: “If your vehicle gets stuck in the snow you must remain calm and try to pull over safely. Stay warm and call us.”

The message further advised against taking unnecessary risks and keeping up to date with travel info and road closures on the police website and on social media.
