POLICE who stopped an uninsured car on the M4 found themselves witnesses to a marriage proposal.
Officers from the tri-force roads unit pulled it over on Tuesday night and discovered the lack of insurance was not deliberate.
But they seized the vehicle and PC Alan King drove the couple inside – a man of 23 and a 21-year-old woman who both came from Bristol – off the motorway so they could arrange to get home.
While in the back of the police car, the man proposed to his girlfriend and she accepted.
“Apparently he had been planning on proposing later today, but thought the idea of popping the question in the back of the police car made a great story,” said a police spokesman.
PC King, who took some photos for the happy couple outside the police car, said: “It’s very pleasant for something like this to happen, rather than what we normally have to deal with.
“I wish them all the best for their future.”
He was invited to the wedding reception, but politely declined.
