POLICE are warning people in Swindon about a female scam artist asking kind strangers to hand over money after telling a sob story.

The woman approaches unsuspecting victims telling them she has lost her keys or is asking for money to get home and has already struck in two seperate incidents which police believe are connected.

One member of the public was conned out of £30 at around 9:30 pm on June 3 on Fleming Way, thinking the woman was in genuine trouble.

A woman from Bristol, aged 54, took pity on the suspect who told her she had lost her keys and purse and had to get to her grandmother’s house in Reading and handed over £60.

PC Paul Bezzzant said: "This woman is exploiting the kindness of members of the community by posing as someone who genuinely needs help, her story often sounds plausible making the victims want to assist. We have had reports before about incidents like this and want the public to be mindful that there is a scam of this nature and to be wary of handing over any money in the street.

There may be other people who have experienced similar situations in Swindon and it would be very helpful to us if they could call us and report any information."

The woman is described as white, approximately 5'6, of medium build. She has shoulder length brown hair and was aged in her thirties.

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Bezzant on 101 quoting ref 54180050426. Alternatively call Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 where details may be left anonymously if preferred.
