THE RSPCA is backing a scheme to reduce the amount of plastic waste in Swindon.

As one of many organisations supporting the Swindon Climate Action Network, it hopes the drive to cut plastic and other waste products will reduce risks to wildlife in the area.

Nationally, the RSPCA receives more than 5,000 calls a year about animals affected by litter. Katie North, spokesperson for the local branch, said: “We are thrilled to get behind SCAN to raise awareness on this really important issue. I don’t think many people realise just how big the problem of littering is in terms of the threat it causes to wildlife and other animals.”

Carrier bags and plastic can holders can be harmful to animals if they get stuck in them. The RSPCA advises people to approach injured animals with care and to take them to the nearest vet or wildlife centre and call if they are trapped or if there is no way of transporting them.
