Two stores in Swindon, one just opening and another recently shut combined in a new documentary series on TV this week.

Saving Poundstretcher which began on Channel 4 on Monday evening saw the then-embattled chain get a new boss - the man who set up Poundworld form a market stall and sold it for £150 million three years ago.

Chris Edwards was taken on as the store’s new chief executive as it was losing money - and the film of his initial look around was explosive.

He reduced one store manager to tears as he said the shop she had worked at for years was in danger of closure.

But something must have improved as the chain has just expanded in Swindon

A new store opened in Regent Street in the town centre with great excitement among shoppers on Friday.

People started queuing up outside the unit from 6.30am ahead of the 10am opening, attracted by some bargains for the first few people in in line.

About 200 people were ready to spend at the store by the time the ribbon was cut by the town’s deputy mayor Coun Kevin Parry.

The closure of Poundworld in Regent Street at the end of July saw the loss of 27 jobs.

Saving Poundstretcher will run at 9pm on Monday evenings on Channel 4, with repeats on All 4
