Plans for a £3 million sports hub and an associated housing estate will be put in front of

Swindon’s public - if councillors agree.

The borough council’s planning committee will be asked to approve a public consultation document about the possible redevelopment of Moredon recreation grounds.

The scheme could see four turf and one 3G artificial football pitches, a road cycling circuit, cyclocross and BMX tracks and three more croquet lawns.

And there could be a new pavilion with kitchen and community use rooms built.

To pay for the £3m redevelopment of the site the council proposes selling land for a residential development in the north east corner of the site, just south of the River Lay.

Land to the north of the river and south of Akers Way would be kept as public open space and also used for cyclocross events.

The authority’s consultation document says: “The secluded housing development will be attractive to a wide demographic including families, young professionals and retired people.

“The layout will be designed to encourage walking an cycling with quality of place at its heart.”

There could be 60 separate homes - three four-bed houses, 14 with three-bedrooms and 22 with two, with nine two-bed and 12 one-bed flats.

Plans include 108 private parking bays and 12 for visitors.

If the plans for the sports hub, which have not yet been submitted for permission, are approved, the council says Sport England, British Cycling and the Football Foundation will support the construction.

Cllr Keith Williams, the council’s cabinet member for corporate and customer services, said: “This is a very exciting project, and if permission is granted to launch the public consultation, we will be keen to get feedback from as many people as possible.

“This council is committed to ensuring that Swindon has plenty of fantastic sporting facilities and quality housing developments.

“I would like to thank everyone who has been involved with preparing this development brief.”

The planning committee will meet at 6pm on Tuesday at the Civic Offices.
