THE man responsible for social care in the borough has admitted he is worried there may not be sufficient staff after Britain leaves the European Union.

Asked about the potential impact of Brexit on care homes and other social care providers in Swindon, Coun Brian Ford said he had received no representations from firms locally about the issue.

However, the lead member of adult social care told the borough's scrutiny committee: "I have inputted through surveys and written representations to the Local Government Association.

"It's worrying [if] we will have sufficient staff."

He said there were EU nationals working in care homes in the town.

"We will have to wait and see what happens," Coun Ford added. "I personally feel that if things go right then we should perhaps suddenly have a reversal and a few more people in the sector."

Great Western Hospital directors have previously said Brexit is expected to hit recruitment. They are looking to hire more nurses and care staff from the Far East.
