Don’t just accept it

I understand-many people are utterly fatigued and disinterested when it comes to Brexit. Who can blame them after 779 days of minimal progress and unbearable government pandemonium?

However, the future won’t ever forgive us if we sit back and let our own representatives break electoral law, lie to us and carry out a Brexit that only satisfies their own interests.

On the business side, it was reported in March that 1 in 7 European companies have moved some or all of their supply chain out of the UK. Companies which are relocating or have left the UK include Goldman Sachs, Unilever and Airbus (if the outcome is no-deal). The Chancellor himself, Philip Hammond, says, “Uncertainty is having a depressing effect on economic growth”. For Swindon, this surely means that free movement-dependent firms such as Honda are likely to relocate.

Not only is there danger to business and households, which are £900 worse-off than before the 2016 referendum, everybody seems to have forgotten that ‘Vote Leave’ broke electoral law, making the mandate for Brexit non-existent and illegal. In addition, we were lied to on countless occasions about the fictional benefits of leaving the trade bloc which has supported us for four decades.

You may well have heard this before, but the damage of leaving the EU is real. If you disagree with how Brexit is proceeding, tell your MP how you feel to show them that Swindon is better in the EU.

Support half marathon

In reply to Mr P Mazzotta regarding the New Swindon Half Marathon. I actually agree with Mr Mazzotta, the traffic situation was not ideal on the day but please let’s remember this was the first time the event was staged. I even said myself that the 11am start was not advisable.

Lots of warning signs went out around the town and there was lots of publicity but sadly it seems this was ignored.

This year the organisers have been proactive and put out event signs around the town only to be told by the council to take them down. It does seem our council do not want this to be a success. All parties - the organisers the council, the emergency services - should sit around the table and discuss the way forwar.

Mr Mazzotta, you say the half marathon should be moved out of town. Bath, Bristol, Cheltenham, Chippenham, Oxford and Reading all have half marathons in the heart of their cities/ towns; it brings footfall, it’s great for business and more importantly brings people into the town. Swindon more than most needs positive stuff to happen in the town and not shoved out in the countryside.

So Mr Mazzotta, you say you live in the town centre so on Sunday 9th September go out and support the event, cheer on those running in memory of loved ones raising money for charity instead of calling the event a disgrace.
