Art, food, 18th century architecture, immaculate vineyards and, of course, the finest wines in the world - Bordeaux has plenty to boast about.

Blessed with a rich diversity of climate and soil, winemakers can grow an abundance of grape varieties, some of which form the backbone to its world-class reds - predominantly made from a blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot. But with fame and fortune comes misconceptions, and while the truly great grand cru wines with a splendid chateau or coat of arms on the label have the potential to cost a king's ransom, they actually represent a tiny minority. In fact, the vast majority are easily within reach, especially if you look for wines from lesser known appellations, small family estates, or supermarket own labels. Indeed, 90 per cent of Bordeaux's wine production sits in the £6-£20 price range, and with three great vintages in a row - 2014, 2015 and 2016 - the wines offer superb quality and value for money.

To steer you in the right direction, here are seven favourites with everyday drinkability...

1. Calvet Cremant Bordeaux Brut, France (currently reduced to £9.36 from £12.49, Ocado). A fizz with finesse, it's easy to forget that Bordeaux produces wonderfully fresh tasting cremant - French for 'creamy' - made in the same method as champagne. A blend of semillon and cabernet franc, this is soft and fruity with blossomy, citrusy aromas, and an appley, fruity palate with well-balanced acidity on the finish.

2. Chateau Talmont Sauvignon Blanc 2016, Bordeaux, France (currently reduced to £6 from £6.98, Asda). A crisp, tangy sauvignon, lemony, grapefruit aromas and similar flavours dominate this brisk, dry white, with enough citrusy acidity on the zesty finish to make it a perfect partner with shellfish and grilled fish.

3. JMS Sauvignon Blanc Bordeaux AOC 2017, France (£12.49, Laithwaites.co.uk). The modern face of Bordeaux with a trendy label, this sleek, creamy sauvignon has some weight to it from the oak influence. Scented with a nice mix of citrus and tropical fruits with concentrated lemony flavours, tangy limey notes balance the richness with a spicy note on the vibrant finish.

4. Chateau de Seuil Bordeaux Rose 2017, France (£10.99, Virgin Wines). Why not pass on a Provencal pink and invest in this Bordelaise beauty instead? A plush, peachy gold, with lovely strawberry-scented aromas, it's bursting with bright berry fruits. Deliciously refreshing, it's a lively, juicy rose that finishes with a fresh minerally streak.

5. Sainsbury's Taste The Difference Claret 2015, Bordeaux, France (currently reduced to £6.25 from £7, Sainsbury's). An outstanding example of a best-value Bordeaux, with wonderful depth to the dark, ripe fruits. Rich and expansive, with hints of cassis, violet, liquorice, tobacco and sweet spice, seductive aromatics and a long, intense finish makes this an instant crowd-pleaser. Terrific with a summery Sunday roast.

6. Chateau Moulin du Terrier Bordeaux Rouge 2016, France (£11.99, Virgin Wines). Cited as a blockbuster vintage, put any thoughts aside that Old World Bordeaux can't produce rich, ripe, juicy reds with a drink-me-now New World deliciousness. Utterly gorgeous from word go, the just crushed berry bouquet keeps on giving, with sumptuous blackcurrant fruit laced with cassis and sweet peppery spice on the polished palate.

7. Morrisons The Best Saint Emilion 2015, Bordeaux, France (£12, Morrisons). Offering great value from this famed appellation and another superb vintage, this merlot-dominant blend is immediately enjoyable with its spicy, brambly nose, bags of ripe, plush blackberry fruit with a touch of cedar wood, and more sweet berried spice on the velvety smooth finish.
