A FORMER hotel and spa almost destroyed by fire could be knocked down and rebuilt as a single family house.

The Old Vicarage in Vicarage Lane, South Marston is now derelict and without a roof but Bellway Homes Ltd has applied for planning permission to turn it into a large family home.

And it’s going to need some work.

The report to Swindon Borough Council’s planning department said: “An inspection was facilitated by a cherry-picker and a walk around survey of the perimeter at ground floor. It was not possible to gain access due to its unsafe condition.”

The roof and first floor have both collapsed and the load-bearing walls are now less stable.

The report recommends demolishing the whole building and rebuilding from the ground up as the structure is in such a perilous condition.

Two options have been suggested - one to build on the same footprint as the old building, the other is to build a house on the site closer to the lane. Both options are for a four-bed family home.
