Swindon Borough Council continues to look for a developer who can to breathe new life into the old Aspen House site in the town centre.

The building, once home to the Register Office, was demolished in 2014 after Swindon Borough Council determined the cost of repairing it would be too great.

Outline planning permission was granted to Forward Swindon - the council's own development and regeneration enterprise - in October last year for 118 units of one and two-bedroom apartments within a building which could be up to 13 storeys high. But the council are struggling to find a developer to invest in the project.

The Council hopes the development in the prominent town centre location on Regent Street will rejuvenate the area by turning it into a quality place to live and work.

Coun. Garry Perkins, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Town Centre, said: “This is a very exciting project and we are keen to work with developers to bring it to fruition.

“Making the town centre an attractive place to live and work is a key priority for this Council, and this site has huge potential for successful redevelopment.”

Aspen House was a 12-storey office block built in the 1970s. The site has an area of 0.49 ha (1.21 acres) and lies directly opposite The Savoy at the top end of town.

Expressions of interest are requested by 12 noon on Wednesday, 12th September 2018.
