THE Mechanics Institute is calling for local stories to remember the town’s history for the nationwide Heritage Open Days event.

The event, held at the Central Community Centre, is being run by the Heritage Lottery-funded project Sharing Swindon’s Stories.

Organisers are asking local people for memorabilia, photographs or even memories and stories of social or cultural interest for Swindonians to share.

Daniel Rose, executive director of the Mechanics’ Trust said: “We always look forward to Heritage Open Days and welcoming new people to the Railway Village.

"This year we are particularly pleased to also be able to involve local people in our Sharing Swindon’s Story project.”

The trust is hoping that former residents of the Railway Village and workers of the GWR will share their memories of decades past.

Tours of the Railway Village will also take place at 10.30 am and 1.30pm and the Railway Village Museums will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 10am until 3pm.

Heritage Open Days involves 2,500 organisations across the country over the first two weekends in September.
