TV comedian Chris Ramsey’s current show was inspired by making a will. It is based on a letter he imagined writing to his toddler son.

Just Happy To Be Out Of The House proved so popular that Chris has extended the run for an extra 54 dates including Swindon.

Despite springing from the rather dark subject of will making, Chris says that his show is anything but sad.

“I had the challenge of finding the comedy in it. The whole show is based on sitting in a solicitors’ office and putting a letter in the will addressed to my son. It is full of life advice such as: Don’t take a toddler on holiday,’’ said Chris. “He was that toddler at the time. It is a very different take on a serious subject. Just Happy To Get Out Of The House title sprang from the fact that if I am at home too long my wife says I become hard to live with.’’

Chris hosted his own show on Comedy Central and he says he had some amazing guests including He says that one of his favourite guests was John Boyega who played Finn in the 2015 film Star Wars: The Force Awakens and its 2017 sequel Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

“I have two nephews who love Star Wars so we did a video message on Twitter for them,’’ said Chris.

The comedian wasn’t exactly the joker at school, in fact it wasn’t until much later he caught the bug. “I didn’t know that I was funny. I went on holiday with my family and I was telling my friends the story and they laughed, and from that moment I had the adrenalin buzz.’’

He says his mum wanted him to have something to fall back on, but he dropped out of his film and media degree at university anyway. Luckily his comedy paid off pretty quickly.

The comedian says he enjoyed hosting the I’m A Celebrity Extra Camp with Joe Swash, but it was hard work.

“Doing the nightshift in Australia in the middle of the jungle, it was really hard graft. I did it for a year and made some good friends and I was very happy to land that job, naturally. It was a good string to my bow.’’

The comic is a regular on Keith Lemon’s Celebrity Juice where he inevitably gets the short end of the stick in the games.

“All part of the fun,’’ said Chris. “I remember one team was me, Ed Sheeran and Chris Kamara (former Swindon Town footballer, now Sky Sports presenter) and we were all the worse for wear.’’

The comedian has also tried his hand at sit com, starring as Jack in two series of Hebburn on BBC2 with Vic Reeves.

“That was a very different experience. With stand-up you can be selfish, this was a different story, all working together. I would love to do more sit com but my first love will always be stand-up,’’ he said.

Like many comedians Chris cut his baby teeth at the Edinburgh Fringe with his first solo show Aggrophobic in 2010.

“The Fringe gets you used to performing, it teaches you to gauge the audience. You can perform in the same room but it will always be different.’’

He obviously paid attention because the following year his show Offermation was recorded for BBC Radio 4 and nominated for an Edinburgh Comedy Award.

Chris is a familiar face on TV appearing as guest on Mock The Week, Nevermind the Buzzcocks and Celebrity Mastermind.

“It’s fun to work alongside your peers on Mock The Week, Jimmy Carr just sits there laughing while I’m being educated. I chose the Sopranos, the TV show, and did quite well on the specialist subject for Celebrity Mastermind, but not on general knowledge!’’

Chris is heading for Swindon’s Wyvern Theatre on September 16. Tickets are £23.50 and available from 01793 524481 or visit www.swindontheatres.co.uk - Flicky Harrison
