A SWINDON mum is going to have handfuls of brightly coloured powder paint thrown at her this weekend - but it’s all for a good cause.

Kirsty Mapstone-Davis will be taking on the Run the Rainbow in memory of her dad Terry, who died of a brain tumour.

The Prospect Hospice’s 5k run is being held at Lydiard Park tomorrow.

Kirsty, of Haydon Wick, wants to raise awareness and funds for the hospice after she saw first-hand the level of care they gave her father.

They also helped fulfil a dad and daughter’s dream as they helped organise Kirsty’s wedding, to make sure Terry could see her get married before he died.

Kirsty said: “In October 2009, my dad was admitted to Prospect Hospice. He was just 47 and had a brain tumour.

“Dad always wanted to be there for my big day and it meant everything to me to have him see me marry my husband Ashley.

“Within 48 hours they had sorted out catering and even made sure the register office stayed open late for us to make it legal.”

The date was originally set for a year later in October 2010.

And in just a day and a half the couple had managed to sort out all the essentials such as the registrar, the suits and the wedding cake.

The experience of her dad’s care has inspired Kirsty and her daughters to get colourful in Terry’s memory nearly nine years after his care.

Kirsty said: “This year I’ll be taking part in Run the Rainbow with my daughters, Lacey, who’s seven, and five-year-old Hallie.

“They are excited to be running in their coloured tutus in memory of Grampy, helping me to thank Prospect Hospice for all that they did for him.

“We just want to have fun and help in any way possible.”

A spokesperson for Prospect Hospice said: “Every one of the hundreds of runners has their own reason for taking part in Run the Rainbow.

“Some do it just for the fun of it, either walking, skipping or dancing around the course, and some just love the challenge of a 5k run.

“For others the event is simply a way of showing their gratitude for the special moments that Prospect Hospice enabled them to share with their loved ones.”

The event starts at 10am. Online registration has now closed, but people who want to register on the day will have to pay £50 for adults and £25 for children. Both prices include registration and a donation in lieu of sponsorship.
