A CARAVAN which tipped upside down blocked the M4 by Junction 16 on Sunday morning.

Traffic was at a standstill a on M4 Westbound from J16 A3102 Spittleborough Roundabout (Swindon West) to J17 Stanton Saint Quinton Roundabout (Chippenham).

The accident affected travel from Swindon to Bristol.

Police, fire and ambulance were at the scene. All three lanes of the motorway leading westbound were shut for around 20 minutes but two of these were reopened at midday.

The traffic began to ease after recovery work was completed, with the accident cleared and all lanes open before 3pm.

A spokesman for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call from the police at 11.19am to reports of an overturned caravan. The accident involved two cars and a caravan, which were made safe and moved to the hard shoulder.

"One crew from Westlea and one crew from Stratton attended, then left the scene at 12.01pm."
