PEOPLE who put too much material that could be recycled in their general waste bin risk having their refuse collection stopped altogether.

It is one of a number of measures being considered by Swindon council in an attempt to boost recycling.

The council is consulting on a 10-year waste strategy proposal, which could be introduced as early as next month.

As it stands there are four types of recycling collection in Swindon - recycle box, white or transparent bag, green wheelie bin or green bag, and communal recycling.

All are done fortnightly, although some of options require a subscription.

The council says if householders put glass, paper and card in the appropriate recycling bin it will make plastic recycling collections more feasible in the future.

The council collects waste from 97,000 households and is currently trying to boost the amount of waste householders recycle to 50 per cent by 2020.

But at the moment just 38 per cent is recycled with 4% of this going to landfill as the rest is processed by the Solid Recovered Fuel plant and turned into fuel.

A council report on the strategy says public engagement is needed to “ensure that our strategy is representative of Swindon residents’ opinions.”
