THE left-wing bookshop in London which was visited by activists - including former UKIP candidate Martin Costello - will be selling books in Swindon this weekend.

Bookmarks, was targeted by protesters, including one wearing a Donald Trump mask earlier this year, has been invited to have a stall at the Swindon Radical Bookfair by the town’s Trades Council.

Dee Curd, secretary of Swindon Trades Council said: “The majority of Swindonians were rightly disgusted upon learning that an ideologically-motivated attack on a bookshop was perpetrated.

“We thought this was a great opportunity to show that most of us believe in solidarity, respect and tolerance and completely reject the far-right and their bully boy tactics.

“While the attack on Bookmarks was a worrying insight into the intolerance and disregard for free speech of the far right, we hope that by donating to an organisation such as Hope not Hate, some good will come of the incident.”

Mr Costello has denied any wrong-doing in his visit to the bookshop, and says he left before any confrontation, which was captured on video, began.

He was suspended by UKIP but then later cleared by the party.

However, he will not be welcomed at the book fair should he wish to visit.

A spokesman for the Trades Council said: “We wouldn’t want to see him there.

“We’ve seen no evidence he can conduct himself properly.

“We’d want to see evidence of a change in his behaviour.”

Mr Costello has not yet responded to a request for comment on the book fair.

The book fair will be held between 1pm and 5pm on Saturday at the Central Community Centre in Emlyn Square.
