Business of differing sizes from Swindon expressed a clear desire for certainty as to what's happening with Brexit.

That's the verdict from Clare Moody, the Labour MEP for the south west who organised a 'Brexit summit' for firms in Swindon last week.

Held at the National Self-Build and Renovation Centre in Lydiard, the event was billed as trying to define: 'What's a good Brexit for Swindon?'

Speaking after the event, Ms Moody told the Adver: "We had about 100 people there so it was a good turn out, and they were from across all sectors of the economy, from manufacturing, from services and some were just there as interested individuals."

She added: "The over-riding theme of the questions on the day was one of uncertainty.

"A lot of them spoke about having to manage the problems of leaving the EU, how there's just a lot more to think about and do if they want to continue trading with the EU, and they do want to continue trading with the EU."

The MEP added that delegated expressed worries about the increase in bureaucracy, and how to maintain environmental protection and safeguarding workers rights.

She added: "Swindon has a very diverse economy with almost full employment, and we must look to the impact on people, how people are treated.

"The government promised a deal that would be as good as or even better than what we have. That's not what people are seeing now. They want to know what they need to do to mitigate the problems caused by leaving."
