A RODBOURNE pub has done a whip around to replace two kids bikes after they were stolen from the garden shed.

Thieves stole the two bikes from the family shed at in Rodbourne around three weeks ago.

After dad John Husband posted the news on social media he was contacted by Phil King from The Dolphin Pub who offered to pay for new ones.

John Husband told the Adver: “My kids were very cut up about it. They struggled to sleep that night and were quite upset.”

“We noticed the shed door was open, whoever took them only went for the kids’ bikes. It wasn’t a professional, just someone looking to get a quick buck.”

After the pub got in touch they agreed to take the kids down to Swindon Recycles to pick out new bikes, with the help of staff there who offered them a discount.

Phil King, landlord at the Dolphin Pub on Rodbourne Road, saw the message from the kid’s mum on a Rodbourne community page on Facebook.

“I was just talking about it with people at the bar, and I said I’m going to message her. And they said what a good idea.

“Straight away a couple of lads chucked a couple of fivers over the bar and we started a little glass behind the bar.

“I phoned them up and told them I read the post said us at the Dolphin would like to replace the bikes to show the kids there are good people in Rodbourne and it’s a good community.

“It’s an incredible thing to do, it’s absolutely amazing,” added John. “It still can’t believe it to be honest.

“There is a real sense of community spirit here, it’s nice that there is someone out there looking out for the community.”

The family have since bolstered their security and added extra locks onto the shed and bought D-locks to lock the bikes together.

The pub might even see some more business from the generous act.

“My wife has booked the Christmas party there,” added John. “Hopefully more people will go in there now”

But the dad also mentioned the increase in drug-related crime area, which is becoming a growing concern for residents around Mannington Recreation Ground.

“Everyone in Rodboune knows its going on,” he said. “I went down there once and saw a guy pretending to kick a football around with a bag next to him, dealing in the park.

“The consequence of this is you get opportunist burglaries.”
