Doing ‘ a Cameron’

WHENEVER things don’t go your way and you sulk and throw your toys out of the pram you should now be known as doing a “Cameron”.

Whilst David Cameron has crawled back under his rock, Mrs May is out there, steely determined and showing resilience in the face of adversity. Lambasted by her own party, battered by the EU and berated by the media, Mrs May defiantly battles on when it would be oh so easy to do a “Cameron”.

David Cameron will go down in history as the snake who was cocksure that the referendum would go his way and then cowardly slithered away at the first sign of the going getting tough.

Whatever Mrs May’s legacy will be she will never be able to be accused of doing a “Cameron”.

Obstacles in the way

DAVID Collins’ letter in SA (Tuesday September 25) had a lot of truths in it. When David Cameron gave us a vote on the referendum about staying in the EU he was so sure that the people would vote to stay in, how wrong he was, so he just walked away from the mess he helped to create.

We did know what we were voting for (immigration, NHS, sending millions of pounds over the water and to stop being ruled by the non-elected in Brussels).

All the money-people seem to be finding lots of obstacles to stop a smooth transfer instead of helping in seeing the good it will do this country.

Failures of the past

THE post from Mr Bates, has amused me. Perhaps he will comment on the following.

For years, people in Swindon have been sent to the Ridgeway Hospital, (private) for routine operations, in order to cut the queues at the GWH or then Princess Margaret Hospital. That was Labour policy then and a good job it did, in cutting those waiting for ops.

Perhaps he will comment on the A & E dept at the Stevenage hospital, I think it’s called the Lister Hospital, that Labour ‘leased’ out to a private contractor. One of the first things that the coalition government did in 2010 was to cancel the agreement , at a cost of around £53m, as people were losing their lives, due to bad in-house management of records etc.

Perhaps he will comment on the open letter signed by Mr McDonnell, asking for the monarchy to be disbanded, MI5, and for armed police to be disbanded.

Also, after watching this week’s Labour conference, where we were asked to have a general strike to bring down the government, cause economic mess and bring hardship to thousands, over the loss of jobs, can he show just one speech where someone actually said what Labour’s policy on immigration is, bearing in mind that Ms Abbott, (Home Secretary in waiting), has called for all border controls to be cut, detention centres closed and a free-for-all for migrants.

Finally, can he confirm what the two prospective Labour MPs have done to cut the huge PFI debt, hanging over the GWH, caused by Labour policies of failure in the past.

We’re on the move

SADLY Square One’s usual venue of the Shield and Dagger has come to an end and a new venue awaits us in the Southbrook Inn, Southbrook Street.

Established over 21 years ago, Square One is a friendly, lively social club primarily for unattached and single people. It is Swindon’s largest club of its type and has over 100 members; there is a roughly equal male/female ratio.

Our members attend events such as skittles, theatre trips, dances, Sunday lunch, greyhound racing, weekends away, holidays, quiz nights, meals out, bowling, walks and cinema visits to name but a few.

It is suitable for the over 45s who would like to improve their social life. It is primarily a social club not a dating agency, any relationships which do form being a result of normal social interaction. Couples who meet at the club are able to retain membership.

Initial visits are free, thereafter monthly subscriptions are £3. The club is non-profit-making, run by a voluntary committee and any surplus money is used to subsidise events.

Club night is every Wednesday from 8pm, we have exclusive use of the function room of the Southbrook Inn in Southbrook Street, Swindon, SN2 1HF and new members are most welcome to attend. Just turn up and ask for a committee member or call 01793 765413 for details.

It’s a great idea

AFTER reading in the SA about the poor air quality in Kingshill Road, the council may decide to put a bus gate in there, that’s a great idea.

With the bus gate that will be enforced soon going into Wichelstow from Wootton Bassett Road at peak times, can the council please tell us where is the traffic going to go?

How will residents get to and from there homes? How will you be able to travel from the west to South Swindon and beyond? Wootton Bassett Road to Westcott Place from Mannington is grid-locked most of the day,

Marlborough Road from South Swindon to Old Town is grid-locked in the morning, I can see the whole of Swindon becoming one giant carpark.

I think the answer is, either open all so-called “Rat runs” and let drivers choose their own way or SBC Planners, just leave things alone, you have cocked up the roads in Swindon enough.
