A WALKING for health scheme that started a year ago now has more than 500 members.

Step Out Swindon, which is led by volunteers, was formed after the borough council withdrew funding from its walking programme.

Co-ordinator Grahame Lee thanked everyone who had made the scheme possible with support and commitment.

The group has recently added three more walks to its routes and is looking for even more people to get involved.

Publicity officer Dawn Burt said: says “No-one ever feels lonely after joining one of our walks as they soon chat to other walkers and make new friends.”

The walks are free and all participants need is comfortable shoes and waterproof jackets. Routes include Penhill, Christ Church in Cricklade Street, Wroughton, Covingham, Mannington and Lower Shaw.
