A CAMPAIGN to promote mental wellbeing will be rolled out tomorrow to support World Mental Health Day.

Swindonians can pledge to do something small to promote positive messages about mental health.

These activities can be as simple as going for a walk, reaching out to or reconnecting with friends, researching a new subject, helping a neighbour with a task, or getting involved in a community project.

GLL is offering free access to its facilities (Oasis Leisure Centre, Health Hydro, Link Centre, or Haydon Centre and Gym) throughout the day.

The town-wide initiative is being run by Swindon Borough Council to raise awareness of the importance of improving wellbeing.

Coun Brian Ford, Cabinet Member for Adults, said: “Mental health is something which affects each and every one of us so it is important we take positive steps to look after it and support others.

“This is the council’s Year of Mental Health and we want to spread positive messages around mental wellbeing across the borough and World Mental Health Day is a great opportunity to do this.

“Pledges can be as simple as going for a walk, meeting a friend for a coffee and a chat or something larger like running a mental health awareness event at your workplace.

“My pledge is to talk to at least 10 individuals on World Mental Health Day to spread the positive message about the importance of mental wellbeing.”

To promote the campaign, wear green, take photos, and use the hashtag #WMHDSwindon on social media.

On the same day, the Olive Tree Cafe will host an evening of mental health-themed poetry and theatre at Shoebox Theatre from 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £10 each from shoeboxtheatre.org.uk/whatson

In addition, community centres across Swindon have taken a pledge to support wellbeing and signed up to a six-month campaign called ‘5 Ways to Thrive in your Community;.

This campaign, in partnership with Public Health Swindon, will launch on Thursday with posters by Swindon artist Mary Parsons.

World Mental Health Day is an international campaign by the World Federation for Mental Health.
