A MOTORIST is to face a court hearing after being caught driving on the M4 at more than 130mph.

Police were patrolling the stretch close to Swindon between junctions 15 and 16 at about 9pm on Thursday night when they spotted a BMW being driven at high speed.

PC Will Ayres, from the roads policing unit was in the police car and saw the BMW pass.

The speed recorded on his speed gun was 131mph, said Wiltshire Police yesterday.

A 24-year-old man, from Wales, was stopped near Swindon and has been reported to court for speeding.

PC Ayres said: “The speed at which this man was driving at a relatively busy time of the evening is completely unacceptable.

“His actions were both selfish and disgraceful.

"Despite putting his own life at risk, he risked the lives of other motorists with such dangerous driving."

The officer said: “Nothing is ever worth driving at this speed – this was 61mph over the speed limit.

"When you get behind the wheel of a car, no matter how much of a rush you may be in to get to your destination, please think about your actions and the consequences they may have before it is too late.”

The motorway has been the scene of two fatal crashes in the past two weeks. A woman died died when a minibus carrying 10 people overturned between junction 14 and 15 last Saturday.

Three people died earlier in the month following a collision between a lorry and a minibus that was carrying staff from a special school in Berkshire.
