FREE sessions at a Swindon boxing gym look set to be a big hit with families.

Scrappers is providing four weeks of free sessions thanks to Swindon Sports Forum covering the costs.

It will include boxing and fitness sessions targeting children and families who participated in Beat the Street initiative -the first class was held earlier this week.

To ensure children are still able to enjoy the sessions after they return to school, the next three get fit classes will be held weekly on a Tuesday starting at 4pm.

Olivia McCann, Swindon children’s Scrapstore CEO, said: “Beat the Street is a great initiative to encourage families to participate and get active whilst take part in sporting activities in the local community.

“Since seeing that Swindon has trumped our bigger neighbour Reading with the number of miles covered, we want to continue to encourage our whole community to get active.

“Scrappers Gym wants to maintain this great initiative, we already run a variety of sessions for children, young people, adults and people with disabilities.

“We want people to have as much fun as possible, whilst making the most of the benefits of exercising.”

The west Swindon based gym hopes that the scheme will set a precedent that will see families getting involved together and will lead to regular activity.

Gym coach Suzie Reid will run the sessions; she coaches at grass roots level as well as a range of adult classes.

Suzie qualified as an amateur boxing tutor in 2007 and has been coaching boxing to people of all ages and abilities ever since.

The children are taught the skills of boxing combined with the importance of respect and living a healthy lifestyle.

Beat the Street has now come to an end, but it has seen 24,000 participants in this town alone. The get fit scheme encouraged people of all ages to walk, run, cycle and ride to beat boxes across Swindon to score points and win prizes.
