THE largest battalion in the British Army will march through Lyneham in Wiltshire for Remembrance Sunday.

More than 1,000 soldiers and officers from the MOD Lyneham-based 8 Training Battalion Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers will parade through the North Wiltshire village on November 11.

Remembrance Day this year coincides with the centenary of Armistice day, which officially ended the First World War at 11 November 1918 at 11.11am.

Commanding officer of MOD Lyneham-based battalion wanted his soldiers to mark the symbolic and solemn occasion with a special ceremony.

The march will culminate in the grounds of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Museum, outside MOD Lyneham, with an outdoor community Remembrance Service, attended by 1,000 soldiers and members of the public.

Lt Col Horn explained that the parade will also celebrate three years since the battalion moved to MOD Lyneham – along with the Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering, the Corps HQ of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, a Royal Marines detachment, and other military organisations. He hopes that the parade will help to further develop MOD Lyneham’s growing relationship with the community in and around the village.

MOD Lyneham military personnel will also be taking part in Remembrance Day parades in Calne and Royal Wootton Bassett.

Around 700,000 British soldiers were killed in the war between 1914 -1918.
