DOG walkers and families out for a day in the Wiltshire countryside have been warned by police after a spate of thefts at beauty spots.

There have been eight reports of cars being broken into in the last month at places including Avebury and Silbury Hill. On at least one occasion the car targeted by thieves had been left unlocked, Wiltshire Police said.

Sgt Pete Foster said: “As a result of these incidents, we have increased patrols in the areas of Avebury and Silbury Hill but we would also like to encourage members of the public to be vigilant when leaving their vehicles parked in beauty spots.

“Do not leave valuable items in your vehicles. If you are unable to remove luggage, make sure it is locked away and out of sight in the boot of your car.

“Always check you have locked your car and if you see anything suspicious call police on 101 or 999 if a crime is in progress.”

One theft, which took place on October 31, saw thieves make off with a handbag that contained purses, £65 cash and credit cards.

It was taken from a layby off the B4003 near Marlborough between 2.30pm and 2.45pm.

In other incidents, car windows have been smashed and the thieves have taken mobile phones, handbags and other luggage.
