YOUNG soccer players have made a video tribute to town players from Royal Wootton Bassett killed in the First World War.

The town’s football club teamed up with students from Royal Wootton Bassett Academy to create a four-minute sequence of children reading out the names of former players who died.

Mari Green, a Spanish teacher at the school and head of the youth section at the football club, told the Advertiser: “We saw the Remembrance Games taking place and just thought we’d go for it.

"I managed to get the names of the soldiers from the history department here and it was like a collaboration between the town club and school.”

Special thanks were paid to Sophie Hodgetts, a sixth form student at the academy for editing the video and Dan Webb one of the history teachers.

“I just did the videos really quickly and Sophie took them off me and put it all together,” added Mari.

“As a school remembrance is particularly important, it’s something they need to know about and carry on with."

The importance of was particularly significant because of the town's involvement in the repatriation of fallen soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan. A total of 345 were brought home through RAF Lyneham over four years.

"We’ve got very strong links with remembrance,” she said.

The club also planted a tree to commemorate the armistice centenary on Sunday. The video can be found on rwbtfc.co.uk
