FOOTBALL legends from Swindon Town were on hand to help fans with dementia remember their best sporting memories yesterday.

Those who came enjoyed a full tour of the stadium and could take part in a sport quiz about the club’s history, aiming to stimulate discussion and reminiscence, a proven treatment to help people living with dementia.

Clive Maguire, senior football development officer for Swindon Town Football in the Community, said: “Dementia is something close to many of our hearts, here at the Club.

“Hosting this event is our way of acknowledging this,and doing our bit to support our fans who are living with dementia.”

Fond memories includes Don Rogers' two extra time goals against Arsenal, winning Swindon the 1969 Football League Cup.

Sporting Memories was organised by Swindon Town in the Community Trust together with Swindon Borough Council.

Councillor Brian Ford, Swindon Borough Council’s cabinet member for adults, said: “Sport is a great way of bringing people together, but it also forms a big part of people’s lives.

“Sporting Memories has proved to be a different approach to tackling dementia by stimulating people’s minds and I’m sure all those attending on Wednesday will be thrilled to reminisce about their favourite Town moment with two of Swindon’s greatest ever players and a former club chairman.”

Reminiscence therapy can use one or all of the five sense to help individuals living with dementia remember parts of their lives. By sharing memories it can help develop more positive feels, reducing stress and agitation, and reduce anxiety and isolation.
