WILTSHIRE police is making a drive this week to encourage road users to be more bike smart.

The force is reminding drivers that cyclists and motorcyclists are the most vulnerable on the roads, with more than 100 riders injured on the UK's roads every day.

Wiltshire Council cabinet member for Highways, Bridget Wayman, said: "As the number of those travelling on two-wheels increases, it is more important than ever that we take extra care on the roads.

"Whether you're cycling or driving, there are things we can all do ensure the safety of others and I would encourage everyone to find out how they can be Bike Smart."

There is a Road Safety event at County Hall, Trowbridge, on Wednesday 21 November from 10am - 2pm to find out more about being Bike Smart.

During the week, Wiltshire Police, in conjunction with Swindon and Wiltshire Road Safety Partnership will be carrying out Operation Close Pass in Trowbridge, which aims to raise awareness of cycle safety and crack down on motorists who drive too close to cyclists.

Sgt Simon Drewett, Head of the Road Safety Unit at Wiltshire Police, said: "We are fully supportive of any campaign that promotes safe use of our roads, and this includes those on two wheels.

"Operation Close Pass, which is being held during Road Safety Week, will enable us to highlight the dangers of motorists driving too close to cyclists and we will also use it as an opportunity to educate cyclists on how to stay safe.

"We aim to keep our roads as safe as possible and we will continue to work with local partner agencies to do this."
